A Short-term Assignment with WRCS

An opportunity for assessing tourism potential for four selected sites in Uttar Pradesh is available with WRCS. The researcher will be required to visit the selected sites, survey its potential for tourists, infrastructure development, involvement of local communities, review the current tourism policy and prepare a feasibility report for the project. The researcher will be required to arrange and participate in discussions and site visits with UP Forest Dept. Officers, Tourism Dept. officers and tour operators to understand the issues in detail.
Duration of the assignment is 3 months and will be starting immediately.

Field Officer - Whale Shark Conservation Project


Division : Marine Conservation Division


Location : Veraval, Gujarat


Position : One


Experience : Experience in Marine Conservation or related field


Qualifications : Marine biologist / MSc wildlife


Gross Compensation: As per qualifications amp; experience


The Officer will be Responsible for field or on-site implementation of the project in association with the reporting manager and in line with the scientific and technical plan and all administrative and financial requirements of the HoD and PI.


Responsibilities:

1. Undertake fishermen survey to collect historical data/sighting of Whale Shark distribution.
2. Undertake survey and studies for population estimate and distribution through Photo ID and tagging.
3. Assist in collecting genetic sample of WS as per protocol for further Genetic Analysis.
4. Coordinate and tie-up with fishermen boat to collect whale shark sighting records.
5. Help in GIS based mapping of Whale shark distribution.
6. Ensure scientific or technical adherence to all needs of the project are met.
7. Ensure that all administrative, HRD and IT needs are met.
8. Responsible for all field reports, photographic documentation, submission of data sheets etc as per the requirements of the HoD.
9. Responsible for all field level governmental and partner liaison at appropriate levels and local public relation needs in consultation with the HoD.
10. Responsible for acting as the on-site representative of WTI (at particular level) and to ensure that the image of WTI as a conservation action organization operating in the field is maintained at all times.
11. Responsible for maintenance of all assets of the organization in the area of activity.

Skills:

• Swimming and diving
• Good communication skills
• Knowledge of regional language – Gujarati will be an added advantage

1) Two paid full-time Research Fellow positions are currently available
Eligibility
• Above the age of 18
... • Proficient in identifying and handling both, amphibians and reptiles
• Skilled in data entry, analyzing ecological survey data (including GIS-based) and writing up reports in English
• Speak three languages: English, Tamil, Malayalam and/or Kannada
• Ability to converse effectively and conduct interview surveys and workshops with local communities and forest department officials
• Can drive a car (license required)
Selected candidates will be based in Theni District of Tamil Nadu and will be paid a monthly remuneration of Rs. 10,500.
2) Internships (minimum of 1 month) – Individuals would need to be proficient at either handling amp; identifying herpetofauna or interacting with people about the same.
3) Volunteers (minimum of 1 week) – Individuals from a non-wildlife/nature conservation background, preferably writers, graphic designers, illustrators, theatre artists, sound composers and non-wildlife/nature photographers will be preferred.
