Handicap International (HI) is recruiting a ****Project Manager for its international Making it Workinitiative****. The position is part of the Technical Unit on Support to Civil Societyand covers a period of 5 months (replacement). This position is preferably based at our head office in Lyon. However, for the right candidate we are happy to consider other arrangements, as much as funding allows, including delocalization in one of HI offices (e.g. UK).
****Background****
Handicap International (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
Making it Work(MIW) is a global multi-stakeholder initiative launched by HI in 2008. Making it Work is primarily a methodology for developing research and advocacy projects on disability issues, based on ****documenting practices that have already demonstrated positive impact**** – and then making practical recommendations about how they can be replicated or scaled-up. This methodology has been used by HI and other organizations to develop projects in a range of different contexts (Middle East, West Africa, Central amp; Latin America, South-East Europe etc) addressing various disability rights issues (www.makingitwork-crpd.org).
2013-15 marks the 4th phase of this initiative with the implementation of a global level initiative focusing on gender and disability.The overall goal of this project is to coordinate a global MIWproject targeting good practices on the elimination, prevention of and response to violence, abuse and exploitation of women and girls with disabilities, to influence international development policies and programming to address articles 6 and 32 of the CRPD (women with disabilities and international cooperation). Specifically, the project aims to use this experience tocreate a MIWmodel for rolling out future international evidence-based advocacy initiatives that can be applied to all disability rights issues.
****Job description****
Under the strategic guidance of the current Making it Work and Inclusive Development Technical Advisor, and in close collaboration with other internal and external stakeholders (MIW international committee), the overall goal of this position is to ****manage the Making it Work global initiative.****
This includes managing the project on gender and disability (including budget, public relations) to achieve its overall goals. Specific attention will go to: ensuring continued mobilization of the International Advisory Committee of MIW; managing the call for good practices; devising and engaging in relevant advocacy strategies.
A part of the post will also be assigned to providing technical support to other ongoing and new projects in using evidence-based methods towards improved disability-inclusive development practices. It includes training and coaching on using the methodology (mostly distant, and occasionally through field visits as needed), and ensuring strategic communication and information on MIW. The expertise of the MIW Coordinator will also be sought to advise disability rights promotion in various sectors, with an expected focus on linkages between the UNCRPDand other treaties mine-related treaties (MBT, CCM).
****Key responsibilities****
Project management: Ensure project management and coordination for the successful implementation of the global MIW project on gender and disability. The expected outcomes are (1) scaling up and evaluation of the MIWmethodology, (2) recognition of the MIW methodology as an important advocacy approach, (3) increased commitments from post-2015 stakeholders to address disability and gender issues through clear indicators and practical strategies, (4) increased capacity of disabled women leaders to participate in evidence-based advocacy.
Capacity development and technical support in disability rights and evidence-based advocacy: Increase capacity among disabled leaders to participate in international advocacy and to use an evidence-based approach to advocacy and support alliance building between DPOs and international development organizations;
Support in international advocacy initiatives and communication: Contribute to networking and support advocacy towards inclusive development, develop a relevant communication strategy including social media
Production of technical tools: Consolidate MIW training tools and contribute to enrich, disseminate and coach on the use of the methodology.
Expert inputs to HI technical unit on ‘Support to Civil Society’: Actively contribute to the technical unit’s strategy and HI’s pragmatic enforcement of human rights approach to disability, take part and bring expertise into team meetings and technical initiatives.

Personal specification
You have :
A university degree in a relevant discipline, such as: International Development, Disability Studies, Political Science, Human Rights Law
Relevant experience (at least 4 years) in working in the field of disability and development, and an excellent understanding of disability rights and the UNCRPD
Relevant experience in project management, including in leading multi-agency networking and collaboration
Substantial experience in working with DPOs and/or women rights activists and engaging in advocacy
Personal experience in preventing violence against women and girls with disability and exposure to using the MIWmethodology would be strong additional assets
Relevant experience (at least 4 years) in working in the field of disability and development, and an excellent understanding of disability rights and the UNCRPD
Relevant experience in project management, including in leading multi-agency networking and collaboration
Substantial experience in working with DPOs and/or women rights activists and engaging in advocacy
Personal experience in preventing violence against women and girls with disability and exposure to using the MIWmethodology would be strong additional assets
